Acquisition of ACC business unit to give GEA Process Engineering secure footing in India’s emission controls market.

December 29, 2010 : GEA Process Engineering has acquired the emission controls engineering unit of ACC, the largest cement producer in India. The acquisition is poised to give GEA Process Engineering a secure footing in the emissions controls market. GEA Process Engineering already delivers process technology for India’s pharmaceutical, food and dairy market segments.

The former ACC business unit has supplied air pollution control solutions for industries and power plants to the Indian and Asian markets for more than a decade. The core technologies supplied by the unit are its electrostatic precipitators and bag filters for emissions controls in the power, cement, steel and iron industries. Being part of GEA Process Engineering, the unit has broadened the range of technologies offered in the Indian and Asian market. The unit will work closely with GEA Bischoff, a GEA Process Engineering technology company specialised in filter technology for emissions controls, to supply the full range of GEA Bischoff technologies to the Indian and Asian markets. In addition the unit will supply the spray drying absorption de-sulphurisation technology, developed by GEA Process Engineering technology company GEA Niro.

“In India emission control equipment is a market segment that will grow steadily on the back of the growth in the country’s economy and its industry, especially the cement and steel industries. We expect this trend to be further accelerated by an increasing rise in the demand for power in general. We now feel very well positioned to meet this demand,” says Srinivasan Subramaniam, Managing Director for GEA Process Engineering in India.

The acquired engineering unit employs experienced engineers with extensive expertise in project management, engineering and the supply of electrostatic precipitators and bag filters for emission controls used in the power cement, steel and iron industries. The acquired engineering unit will be integrated into GEA Process Engineering in India and will continue to market its core technologies in cooperation with GEA Bischoff and GEA Niro from a new office location in Thane. “The acquisition is a natural step in further developing our activities in India. For a number of years we have already invested heavily in both expanding our engineering capabilities and building a complete new workshop. The workshop was completed last year and brings the number of employees in India up to 300,” states Henrik Maimann, Director for GEA Emission Control, part of GEA Process Engineering.

In March 2010, GEA Process Engineering had a ground-breaking ceremony marking the beginning of the construction of a new engineering centre that will house more than 100 engineers in proximity to the facility in Vadodara, Gujarat. The engineering centre will deliver solutions to both the India market as well as other Asian markets. Last year the company completed the construction of a workshop that produces process technology for the pharmaceutical industry in India.
